Clapham Common

One of the largest open spaces in South London is Clapham Common, which has existed for more than 1,000 years. These days the common is at the heart of the community, from those looking to relax or spend time in nature to people who are seeking out spaces to get active. Plenty of community initiatives centre around Clapham Common, offering local residents lots of ways to get involved.

Measuring over 85 hectares, the common is a significant public space in London. You can stroll through open land, woodland, and meadows, and wander through avenues of trees. You can help to care for the spaces here too – there are regular litter-picking events and tree-planting initiatives. Other valuable features in the landscape include three ponds using for fishing, model boating, and wildlife conservation, plus a Victorian bandstand and community garden for growing vegetables. During the summer months, there's a programme of music at the bandstand.

Clapham Common is also home to a variety of other facilities for visitors. There are two different outdoor gym areas, a skatepark, children's playgrounds including a muddy play area for the under fives, several cafés, and a paddling pool. You can also use the bowling green, cricket nets, tennis courts, and table tennis tables here. There are expansive green spaces that are ideal for games of football, rugby, and frisbee, as well as for personal training sessions. Clapham Common is versatile enough that you can enjoy it in whatever way you'd like to.
