Temaki isn't just part of the Japanese handroll wave currently sweeping the capital – it kickstarted it.

London's first handroll bar was originally based in Brixton for several years, building up quite the hype with its sushi handrolls – a rather novel menu item at the time. In 2026, the restaurant moved to new digs in Mayfair, reflecting the incredible demand for the delicately crafted Japanese cones it had helped create. Instead of resting on its laurels, however, the new venue has taken its dining experience up a notch.

Spread across two floors, Temaki in Mayfair is housed in a modern space characterised by light wood, gleaming surfaces, clean lines, and a soothing, nature-led palette, with the overall effect being that of stepping into an elegant listening bar – another concept that's very much in vogue these days in London. And though there's no dedicated private dining room, the various areas can be booked out for a more exclusive occasion.

Seated at the counter or one of the snug tables, diners can order from an assortment of precisely folded sushi handrolls featuring high-end ingredients such as wagyu, lobster, and caviar. You can pick and choose individual rolls or go for one of the pre-built sets in case of decision paralysis. Meanwhile, small plates such as the daily gyoza or sliders help shore up any specific cravings.

It's the rare pioneer that keeps its renown once others start latching on and improving on the original, but Temaki holds its own with aplomb.
