Went there yesterday to celebrate a friend’s 40th birthday.
We were 20 guests so it obviously took time to get the food. Don’t know what my friend had arranged with the kitchen but the invite was at 12.00 o’clock, food arrived just before 15.00 o’clock. I wasn’t too hungry and knowing African kitchens, they tend to take time.
Had prepordered Ofe Egusi but ordered extra food: jollof rice when they served that round first. Food was cold, asked for it to be microwaved, rice came out half cold and chicken still cold. Jollof was really good, chicken way too dry and tasted mostly tomato sauce.
The egusi soup came out after 20min - with beef - which was not stated in the menu at all. Egusi soups can be made from various proteins but it was never stated in their menu that it contained beef (which was extremely dry and tasteless). So the lady was kind enough to arrange egusi with smoked fish. However when asked what what fish it was she didn’t know… but I think it was mackerel. That fish was amazing but egusi soup itself a bit tasteless. Plantain was amazing, small portion but good. Tried my friend’s Efo Riro and that was sooo much better, beef still dry but I don’t eat red meet so didn’t do me much.
Ordered drink when first got in, asked for a non alcoholic one and got, I think rum based sweet (asked her to surprise me). To my horror, she fully charged me 139kr for 10cl of blended juice!!!
In all, nicely interior and very clean but not much African inspired. Food is mostly a disappointment, I would say Penial in Flemingsberg is MUCH better. Very pricey: 280kr Egusi, 230kr jollof & 139(!) for non-alcoholic drink - what a joke, it’s not like it’s Stureplan and even so, real bartenders with skills, experience and training wouldn’t charge that much for some juice mixes that’s not giving an experience. Also, serving food deviating from the menu and its ingredients can cause some serious food allergies and principles of food choices. Not knowing what one’s serving is quite unserious too.
Place was hard to find under all constructions, I would suggest the restaurant might lay out a sigh on Rissneleden as both iPhone map and Google map kept showing the wrong way. There’s however a garage next door with 2hr free parking which was the best part coming to this restaurant.
In all, I wouldn’t come back. My experience when it comes to African food is that it takes long, service can be so and so but if the food is good then it’s worth it. The staff was friendly and the cook was very accommodating but Unfortunately, The Qave lack in basic good food and is way too expensive! There’s an Injera Truck right outside on Rissneleden if you crave African food, it’s East African thou but still very good.
